GAMEPLAY

As with all fighting games, there will be two life bars in a battle, one for each character. The player who takes out the entire life bar of the other will win the round. Winning the required number of rounds per battle, which by default is two, wins the battle for the player. How much damage a character can take before they get defeated is depending on their Hit Points or HP. Some characters, especially the power-types like Machamp, have much higher HP than others so it takes longer to bring them down to zero HP. The catch though, is that characters with higher HP are usually are the slower but harder hitting ones, so you may have a harder time hitting your enemy but when you connect, it really hurts. Your Pokemon stats are indicated in the lower-left of the screen, while your opponent's stats are shown in the upper-right area. These stats include Hit Points, the Guard Gauge, Synergy Gauge, and Support Gauge, which we will discuss in detail later.

ROCK-PAPER-SCISSORS SYSTEM

The selling point of the game is the so-called "Rock-Paper-Scissors" dynamic of the game engine. The whole idea goes like this:

- Normal Attacks defeat Throws
- Throws defeat Counter Attacks

- Counter Attacks defeat Normal Attacks

Counter.jpg

Although limited to close-range fighting, this Rock-Paper-Scissors aspect is still an integral part of the gameplay. Normal Attacks are physical attacks which you use to connect at close range, which means you have to touch your opponent to connect with it, so this set asides the projectile attacks. Throws here are the Normal Throws which you perform by pressing Y + B. This excludes the Command Throws, which are throws that are considered specials, not normals, and are done by using an input aside from Y + B. A perfect example of this is Chandelure's Hex move. Command Throws may vary greatly in properties, so they have been excluded in the Rock-Paper-Scissors system. Finally, a Counter Attack in this game is done by pressing X + A. Once used, your character charges and does a close range move that has innate super armor and auto-blocks all normal attacks. You can also hold down the buttons to charge it longer and increase the damage. Also, while holding X + A, you can press R + any direction to cancel into a dash, this is called "Counter Attack Dash Cancel" or simply CADC. This is a very useful move for trying to safely move in any direction while auto-blocking most projectiles, which makes it essential for close-range fighters, and still very beneficial for zoners trying to keep their range. Having CADC is an advanced part of the Rock-Paper-Scissors system, and adds much more depth into it.

Modes

From the main menu, you can access the various modes of gameplay that Pokken Tournament offers. Upon your first visit in each game mode, the cute in-game advisor Nia will guide you through each and will provide a brief rundown of each mode. Below we will discuss in-detail the content of each mode.

Nia1.jpg

FERRUM LEAGUE MODE

This is the Main Story Mode of the game. As in most fighting games, this is where you will unlock various content like secret characters, in-game money to purchase items, avatar equipment, and even customize options for your own personal Nia! As you progress through this mode, you will receive rewards like PokeGold, various avatar equipment, and customizable options for Nia. This mode is divided into 5 different leagues, starting with the default which is the Green League, and further advancing into the next harder league, until you eventually reach the most difficult Iron League. You will go through a set every time, composed of 5 battles per each. Every time you complete one set, this will increase your ranking in the current league, depending on your performance. Keep doing sets until you reach Rank 8 in the current League to access permission to join the Tournament. The Tournament is composed of 3 straight battles that you have to definitely win, as losing one battle will result in immediate failure and you will have to restart again. After clearing the tournament, you will now be able to challenge the Champion of that League. Beating this champion will grant you access to the next league up the ladder, and also begins or continues the in-game sideplot to unlock Mewtwo and Shadow Mewtwo permanently.

Ferrum1.jpg

ONLINE MODE

Lets you challenge players online. This is where you can casually play with your friends online, or attempt to increase your overall online ranking. Online matches are classified as either Friendly Battles or Ranked Battles, and Ranked Battles may have certain conditions to be followed to be able to earn Rank Points. The more difficult the conditions, the more Rank Points are rewarded to the winning player.

Online.jpg

SINGLE PLAYER MODE

This mode sets you up on stand-alone, single-player battles against the CPU. After you finish one battle, you will have the option to fight another battle, resulting in endless bouts if you wish to. Between each battle, you will get rewards and lucky boxes for your character. Also, an Extra Battle Feature will let you battle with a change of rules for a different fighting experience. This is basically the usual single-player, endless mode that is prominent in Tekken and Soul Calibur games.

Single basic.jpg

Lucky.jpg

LOCAL PLAY

Basically the local Versus Mode of the game. You can setup local battles with a friend by having one player utilize the Wii U Pad, while the other uses another Nintendo controller and a TV set for viewing. Frame Rates are lowered in this setup which may affect the overall performance of the game during the local battles, and this may throw off some players looking for optimum performance in their competitive fighting. To resolve this, engaging in LAN battles instead will yield better results when it comes to frame rates. More experienced players and fighting games veterans will prefer this as framerate is an integral part of a good player's overall performance.

Local.jpg

PRACTICE

This is where you can do your various training sessions. Tutorial covers the basics of the game, while Free Training lets you practice freely. Action Dojo lets the players test the complete moveset of a certain character, and finally Combat Dojo lets you practice the Combos for each character.

Battle Mechanics

FIELD PHASE and DUEL PHASE

During rounds, the action takes place in 2 different "Phases". The battles start in the Field Phase, which is basically a third-person style platform. Camera is fixed behind the player in this Phase, and the players can freely move in 8 directions just like in any 3rd-person action game. The diagonal movement is the main function of this Phase. Moving diagonally allows for easier escapes and evading, which makes Field Phase a better option for long-range and zoning players. Also, similar to the Soul Calibur series, having access to 8 directions and side-stepping makes it easier to land a back-throw, which is more damaging than a normal throw. Use Y to execute long range attacks. These attacks are usually projectiles that do not do much damage but usually ends with a critical hit at the end of the combo string, which results in a Phase Shift. Pressing X allows you to use homing attacks, which are attacks that have shorter range than long range ones since these are melee hits. But homing attacks does much more damage and tracks the opponent, so close-range fighters may prefer these over the long range ones. Pressing A will let you perform Pokemon Moves, which is the equivalent of Special Moves in this game. If it is a strike, these deal "tick damage" if blocked, or damage that is dealt even if blocked. Unlike other Fighting Games though, characters in this game will not die in a round if they have 1 HP left and they take a tick damage. Pokemon Moves that are classified as throws share the same properties as normal throws and are also unblockable, but generally do more damage than usual.

Field2.jpg

Hitting an enemy with a critical hit or a normal throw does a "Shift Phase", in which the game switches between Field Phase and Duel Phase. This also gives the player who executed the Shift Phase a huge increase to the Synergy Gauge. The various Pokemon also have a different arsenal of movesets between each Phase, so it is necessary to understand how your character plays on both Phases.

Duel Phase plays on the traditional, horizontal plane that Fighting Games are most known for. Character movement is more limited here compared to Field Phase, but battles end up quicker since the mode highly rewards close-range fighting more this time. Limiting movement to a strict 2D plane takes out an entire dimension of the game, which is the foreground/ background. Add to this the inevitable "corner" aspect of the 2D plane, and this makes Duel Phase a favorite among the Machamp players. Cornering your opponent is key in Duel Phase, as they can be comboed off in a wall bounce for more damage, and their mobility will be limited to go forward only, since they will be backed up against the wall. This lets you close-in on your pressure and rushdown on the hapless foe. Pressing Y uses Weak Attacks, while Y uses Strong Attacks, which mostly results in more damage and another Shift Phase. Anti-airs are also much more effective here due to the limited movement, so jumping should be more careful in Duel Phase.

SYNERGY OVERVIEW

Synergy1.jpg

Synergy is basically Pokken's term for the Power Gauge. In this game, the Synergy Gauge is visible as a circular gauge beside your HP Gauge. As with most Fighting Games, whenever you hit your enemy or you get hit, the Synergy Gauge increases. Also you can pick up Synergy Cubes scattered around the Battle Stage to increase your meter as well. Each Battle Stage has a different layout of respawning Synergy Cubes, so if you are the scavenging type of player, you may want to memorize these respawn points per each stage.

Once the Synergy Gauge is filled up, you can enter Synergy Burst Mode by pressing L + R. During this mode, your character will enter a powered-up state, your Pokemon changes it's appearance, and your stats will boost up. Additionally, you cannot be flinched or staggered by weaker attacks and you can greatly use this endurance to close in on your enemies. Some characters like Gengar and Blaziken will even enter a Mega Evolve state, in which all of their Pokemon Moves will be powered up, unlike most of the roster in which only a couple or few of their Pokemon Moves will have the power-up version.

Finally, pressing L + R during Synergy Burst Mode will unleash the character's Synergy Burst Move, aka the Super Moves in this game. These have high priority and almost always beats other moves when they trade with each other. As expected, these deal huge damage when they hit, but that damage is reduced when it is entered in a combo to avoid being overpowered. So trying to pull off a Synergy Burst move from a combo is more ideal if you can keep the hits as few as possible, and much more better if can chain a few, more damaging hits like Strong Attacks. Keep this in mind, as once you whiff or miss your Synergy Burst Move, you cannot do it again until you fill up your Synergy Gauge once more.

SUPPORT SYSTEM OVERVIEW

Support1.jpg

Support2.jpg

Beside your Synergy Gauge is the Support Gauge, which is represented by an avatar of your chosen Support Pokemon. Support Pokemons are a pair of Pokemon that provides assistance during battles. You can choose which support Pokemon you want to use between each round during a battle. Choosing the best pair of Support characters depends on your own playstyle and using them as a counter-pick to counter a specific type of opponent, or counter negative statuses in your Pokemon.

Once the Support Gauge is filled up, press L to call your Support Pokemon. You can also enter this into a combo, like when you get a successful hit into a wall bounce, you can immediately call the Support to hit the dazed opponent against the wall, which then you can continue into another combo afterwards. There is a catch in using Support though, as your character is left open for a few seconds during the animation when they are calling the support. This makes seasoned players try to wait for their opponents to throw out a support call at random, then capitalize on their mistake and hit them with a quick move to punish them.

There are 3 kinds of Support Pokemon:
Attack - Offensive attack dealing damage, can be used in a combo, or used as cover for long-range game.
Disrupt - Have high priority and counters enemy attacks, or limit their movement or mobility.
Enhance - Provides buffs or heals your Pokemon from negative statuses.

Pokemon Status is considered Positive or Negative and affects character performance during battles. Some effects are temporary, while some stays until "healed" out from a Support Pokemon that provides healing from negative statuses. There are even Pokemon Moves that are so powerful that you'll receive a negative status after you hit the enemy with the big damage, case in point Chandelure's Overheat move. Once it hits, Chandelure gets a ton of debuffs and it is advisable to have a Support Pokemon ready that provides healing from these statuses.

Positive Status Effects - Attack, Defense, Speed Boost
Negative Status Effects - Attack, Defense, Speed Boost

Battle Stages Overview

Battles Stages are the arenas of the game. There are 19 available in the game. These vary in area size, forms, and the distance of the players during the start of the battle, so it is vital to choose the one that fits your play-style and you are familiar with. Also worth noting is that Synergy Cubes are laid out differently per each Battle Stage, which is another reason for you to pick the one that you are used to fighting at. Listed below are the details for each stage:

    Pokemon Settings

Here you can edit the Pokemon and Support that you will use during Ferrum League. These can be customized anytime. However, it is highly advisable to stick with a few, or even better just one Pokemon at a time, so you can steadily build up your Pokemon into a powerful fighter with all the earned bonuses and higher stat levels.

    PARTNER POKEMON SETTINGS

You can pick the Pokemon that you will be using in Ferrum League here. The more you focus on a single Pokemon, the quicker that Pokemon levels up and gets much better stats increase.

    Partner.jpg

    SKILL POINT ALLOCATION

You can organize the allocated skill points for your Pokemon here. Stats here include Attack, Defense, Synergy, and Strategy which reduces the Support Gauge Charging Time and increases Support Effects. The more you focus on a single Pokemon, the quicker that Pokemon levels up and gets much better stats increase. It is recommended to just concentrate on increasing your Attack Power at all times. This is because characters have built-in moves with defensive capabilities good enough to cover your overall defense in the game. Attack Power on the other hand is a lot more useful, since dealing more damage makes quicker work of battles and lets you level up much, much faster throughout your campaign.

    SUPPORT POKEMON SETTINGS

You can pick the Support Pokemon that you will be using in Ferrum League here. Choosing a Support Pair that directly benefits the way you fight is of utmost importance. If you are a long-range player, you may want to use Support that keeps your enemies from afar and covers your projectile shooting, likewise if you are the close-range or grappler type you have to pick a type of Support that helps you get in your enemies. Also adding a Pokemon that provides buffs and heals negative status that you gain in some moves or from the enemies is very important as well.

    Nia Overview and Settings

Your guide throughout the game is the alluring lady advisor named Nia. She will provide the initial tour on all the different areas or game modes across the Ferrum Region whenever you visit each one for the first time. After the tours, you will now be available to have her as a game advisor and change some of her settings under My Town Profile.

Her major role in the game will be providing various advice. If you keep her "Cheer" ability activated, she will be involved in your battles by providing Cheer Skills which you can equip from your end. Each Cheer Skill can be chosen between the rounds and provides a specific buff that affects the Synergy Gauge, Support Gauge, or both. Also you can even set the frequency on how often she activates her Cheer Skill per round.

You can also change her costumes, though technically you're just changing her illustrations that appear in-game. These costumes are unlocked as you progress through the Ferrum League.

    CHEER SKILLS

This is an in-game feature that you can set Nia to cheer for between each round. Every Cheer Skill gives a nice bonus depending on the chosen skill. You can only select one Cheer Skill at a time. In Ferrum League, you have to equip the Cheer Skills from Nia's Advisor Settings. For Single-Player and Multiplayer game modes, you can do this as you continue along the battes. Below are the available Cheer Skills in the game.

    STANDARD CHEER SKILL:
Winning the previous round will cause the Support Gauge that you did not pick to reach max status. Losing the previous round will cause both Support Gauges to reach max status and the Synergy Gauge receives a boost.

    • Rounds Applied - Round 2 onwards
    • How to Unlock - Default

    SYNERGY FOCUSED CHEER SKILL:

    Sets

Support Pokemon are a pair of Pokemon that provides assistance during battles. You can choose which support Pokemon you want to use between each round during a battle. Choosing the best pair of Support characters depends on your own play style and using them as a counter-pick to counter a specific type of opponent, or counter negative statuses in your Pokemon.
